A Guide to Accommodation, Activities, Restaurants & Businesses in Arniston, South Africa

General Information

This quaint little fishing community is situated in the Overberg region of the Western Cape, South Africa.

Arniston was founded in 1815 after a British transport ship HMS Arniston sank. This town is also known as Waenhuiskraans, which roughly translated means "Wagon shelter cliff", as a large cave in the area reminded farmers of the large shelters wagons were kept in. The impressive sea cave is only accessible at low tide

Arniston is roughly a two-hour drive from Cape Town, which meanders through the beautiful rolling hills of this region. Arniston is set in one of the Cape's most exquisite locations, next to an old fishing village, surrounded by unspoiled beaches and nature reserves.  The entire village is a national monument, yet it is anything but a museum.  Towering white dunes, dusty streets, children playing hopscotch and soccer, elderly men with weather-beaten faces warm themselves around stove fires...all scenes of a stunning little village.
